Description
The Old Wapsie — Fine Art Photographic Print
May 26, 2020 | Independence, Iowa
Standing along the Wapsipinicon River in Independence, Iowa, the historic Wapsipinicon Mill remains one of the community’s most recognizable architectural landmarks. Its imposing brick facade, arched windows, and substantial stone foundation reflect the craftsmanship and industrial ambition of nineteenth-century Iowa.
Milling operations began at this location in 1854, while construction of the present mill took place between 1867 and 1870. Built to serve the region’s growing agricultural economy, the mill became an enduring symbol of Independence’s industrial history and Iowa’s rural heritage.
Photographed by Jeremy Glazier in May 2020, The Old Wapsie captures the mill’s architectural character and lasting presence along the river. Colorful hearts displayed in several windows preserve a distinctive detail of the building as it appeared during that period.
Part of Jeremy Glazier’s fine-art photography collection documenting the historic architecture, landscapes, and disappearing heritage of Iowa and the American Midwest.
